4th Annual Mounted Unit Obstacle Competition
On March 7, 09 at Horseman’s Park, the forth Annual Mounted Unit Obstacle Competition was held. Riders and their horses navigated a course of obstacles used to train the Las Vegas Metro Police Department – Mounted Unit horses for street work.
The event was organized as a fundraiser by the Friends of Metro Mounted Unit. This organization was started in 1999, and raises money to support the LVMPD Mounted Unit. Funds can be used to train new officers for the unit, purchase horses, and help with unforeseen expenses.
The course had a time limit of five minutes and was scored on the difficulty of the obstacles. Obstacles included walking over a mattress that was under a balloon arch, a turnstile, jumps, bridges, meeting McGruff the Crime Dog, a small water obstacle, and side passing on a raised platform. Judges were Officers from the Las Vegas Metro Police Department – Mounted Unit. Prizes were awarded for first, second, and third place.
The event this year was a huge success, and they raised over thirty two hundred dollars for the Las Vegas Metro Police Department – Mounted Unit.
